Julie from Hillerød, Denmark

The lines and lights are absolutely stunning. Nice the moon was there too, beautiful work.

@Julie: Thanks, Julie. I had planned to photograph the bridges and the moon was a nice surprise.

Anita from West Nottingham, United States

You make freeways look good! Great shot--wonderful repeating curves and lines, and of course, light.

10 May 2010 9:32am

@Anita: Thanks, Anita. I had been wanting to shoot this for months, but had to wait until dawn was very early, and a nice Sunday morning to avoid traffic in the photo. They were fairly long exposures and I didn't want light trails.

Marie LC from Dauphiné, France

fantastic angle and shot !

@Marie LC: Thanks, Marie.

MARIANA from Waterloo, Canada

What a super position you had while taking this shot . Love these shapes and lines , besides beautiful colors and light, how goes from corner to corner ! Framing is perfect indeed !

@MARIANA: Thanks, Mariana. I'm fascinated by how artistic some of today's highway interchanges are.

Bettina from Los Angeles, United States

Yes, I see. Not quite LA. But wow, what great light beneath the bridges for such detail! Great light all around. And your lines, these complimentary curves, along with the crescent moon, are just fantastic.

10 May 2010 1:53pm

@Bettina: Thanks, Bettina. LA traffic is best kept in LA. :)

Vaido from Võrumaa, Estonia

Mariana just said it all...

Just perfect. Larry, I wonder...is there any postprocessing magic here, or is this just availalbe light? You are an architectural photographer and you have mastery of flash. Maybe there is flash? I am just wondering, for my own learning, how you got such perfect light throughout? I know that you often do multiple exposures in your nature shots and blend exposures with masks. Has something like this been done here? You are so dedicated to keep getting up so early for these shots. I love the blue in the sky, and am pretty sure that this is the 5 am color. I am drawn to what I like to call the "blue hour" after sunset. Looks like the hour before sunrise has this same tonality. Great work with the repeating curves. You are a master!

10 May 2010 2:54pm

@Barbara: No flash, just multiple exposures. Frame 1: I'm standing in front of my truck which has it's headlights on and some of the light is bouncing off of the white concrete, illuminating the underside of the bridge. Frame 2: Headlights off recording ambient light only. This frame is layered over frame 1 to mask out the roadway which was completely blown out by the headlights. Frame 3 was underexposed for the sky and moon. All three combined with careful masking. No chance for creative lighting here. As it was, a state trooper stopped after I had finished and asked if I had a problem. Thanks for asking, Barbara.

Barbara from Oakland, United States

Hmmm...I bet you bounced a flash off the underside of the overpass???

If I look on this, for me would it be impossible to take a picture like this with this light situation and details. Amazing work with the light. Bravo.
