Day Lily Closeup #1

Posted by
Larry Lefever (Lititz, United States) on 1 April 2010 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

Normally, I wouldn't even bother getting the camera out during the mid-day sun. But, our day lilies are just emerging and they looked so inviting. With the sun creating high back-lighting, I put my closeup filter on a 400mm lens and began to explore. Shooting through some of the foliage provided some unexpected results. One of the things I like most about extreme closeups like this is that I can't pre-visualize the image. I don't know what I want until it snaps into focus in the viewfinder ... and then click!

Many thanks for visiting and though I may not always reply to your comments, know that they are greatly appreciated.

oh yes ! I love this kind of macro ! so elegant and abstract, a pure poetic shot !

@Anna.C: Thanks for seeing poetry. I think rhythm is so important to an image.

Anita from West Nottingham, United States

Florence from Paris, France

Wow and re Wow ! Larry, it's just incredible how light comes from here. Almost fluorescent ! That's really a superb macro which lights and colors radiates on my screen. Lovely therapy. Thanks Larry. 5 stars for this stunning image. you deserve a SpOTLIGHT. No less.

Ron from Saint Louis, United States

Love the abstract quality, here, Larry ... ablaze with creativity and the tones are so pleasing to the eye ... ron

@Ron: Thanks, Ron. I was pleasantly surprised at how well an image shot under such harsh light processed. Very little processing ... Mostly 'curve' adjustments.

A work of genius.

@GJC: Thanks. The genius belongs to nature. I just point a piece of glass at it. :)

A very nice frame, and tastefully presented.

@Michael: Thanks, Michael.

Self-Indulgence from Chicagoland, United States

I like how you used dof to create a curtain and spotlight that one tip of grass, very creative.

1 Apr 2010 3:40pm

@Self-Indulgence: Thanks, Kristen. It was windy, and that was a challenge. Also, and for one who does excellent macros, I'm sure you can appreciate this ... once you find the framing you like, if you look away and then go back to reframe, it's not that easy to find the same composition. :)

Oh don't I know it. I have gone back minutes to a couple days after a macro shot, mind you something I even set up and.. can not get the same angle, light, etc. So I am very careful to get the images clear the first time if at all possible which means tripod most times now. My hands just shake too much.

Wonderful shot Larry, I love that one leaf poking though. It looks like it has a mind of it's own and of course, the colors are great.
